Durable Medical Equipement Q & A

What is durable medical equipment (DME)?

DME includes any medical equipment or device you need to manage an acute or chronic health condition. DME may be needed to support healing, improve mobility, help you maintain independence, or treat a health condition.

Types of DME include positive airway pressure machines like:

  • CPAP
  • APAP
  • BIPAP
  • Auto SV

Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens is a full-service internal medicine practice that specializes in diagnosing and managing chronic diseases, including diabetes, arthritis, and asthma.

The practice also specializes in sleep medicine and has an on-site accredited sleep lab to diagnose sleep disorders and help patients with sleep apnea get the DME they need to support breathing while they sleep.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes you to stop breathing while you sleep. There are three types of sleep apnea:

Obstructive sleep apnea

With obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles in your throat relax while you sleep, obstructing the airway.

Central sleep apnea

With central sleep apnea, your brain doesn’t send the right signals to the muscles that control respiration during sleep.

Complex sleep apnea

Complex sleep apnea is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens uses the information gathered during your sleep study to diagnose which form of sleep apnea you have and develop your customized treatment plan.

What type of DME do I need for sleep apnea?

The type of DME needed to treat sleep apnea is called a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, also called a sleep apnea machine. The CPAP breathing machine helps you maintain positive airway pressure while you sleep, which improves your nighttime breathing and overall sleep.

The sleep apnea machine is recommended for patients with mild to severe sleep apnea and is covered by insurance.

Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens is dedicated to ensuring you get the care and equipment you need to maintain the best of health. To discuss DME for your sleep apnea, call the office or schedule an appointment online today.
